MEET THE TEAM - Summits Outdoors

Posted by Admin on

Justin has worked alongside his dad Alex since he was young. After graduating Uni he decided to join the Summits team full time. His mission was to bring the business online and as a result the business now sells outdoor equipment to people all around the world .

Don't let Justin's chilled out attitude fool you he's one of the most hard-working staff members, usually working weekends and nights. His passion for both the outdoors and the business is why Summits Outdoor is such a highly respected store.

What age did you first start working at summits?

Officially I had just turned 18, although unofficially I have been in and 'volunteering' at Summits for as long as I can remember. I don't really know a life without it!

What made you decide to work full time at summits?

With a year out before I started University, I stepped in to work with my dad, Alex, at turning the business around to be more focused on online sales. Before I knew it I had been working there for the year and kept on doing so throughout my university career as well.

The biggest achievement in the business that you are most proud of?

At the age of 25, I won 'ROCCOs Young Business Person of the year' I think mainly through showing how I balanced getting a 2.1 in Civil Engineering at Glasgow University while helping run and drive the shop. Those were some long days!

What is the best thing about having your own business?

Working in the family business has taught me a lot and helped me mature and become the person I am today. The pressures and responsibilities that come with knowing you are the one to make the calls is what drives me forward and gives me real passion towards the business.

What's the downside if any?

Not being able to turn off and not think about it! I will often find myself on days off or on holiday logging in and sorting something or taking a note on something that we need to look at. But then again, I think I will be like this in any job I have in the future.

Have you had any famous customers?

Our Paisley shop isn't exactly on the red carpet but we have had our odd share of famous customers. Paolo Nutini popped in to buy warmer clothes when he was up visiting his family is probably the best one.

Favourite thing to do in your free time?

I juggle too many sports and hobbies, I am one of those guys that likes to do a bit of everything (even if it is not very well). The main common thread between them all though is doing them outside. Scotland has so much to offer I just love being out and enjoying it all.

How many Munro's have you climbed?

To be honest I haven't counted! I think somewhere in the 40s or 50s but the problem is I have done some of them over 5 times each!

Somewhere you want to explore that you haven't done yet?

I have been lucky enough to have been around most of Scotland but I have never managed to make it to Shetland. It would be amazing to get up there and see how remote it really is!

Favourites Outdoor Locations

We asked Justin to tell us a few of his favourite outdoor spots to visit.

  • Ski Resort- For Skiing I think I would have to pick Glenshee. I have had some amazing trips up, it really is the Scottish 3 valleys!
  • Snowboard Resort- Glencoe is the snowboarder's mountain, that place is left rough and rugged so you can just play on it all day with your board. I will always have time for the Coe!
  • Hike / Hill walk/ Munro - The Buachaille Etive Mor is probably one of the most famous Scottish Munros but there are so many different routes and adventures to be had on that hill. That is one Munro that I have enjoyed so many different trips on - Climbing up Curve Ridge, North Buttress, Hiking up the path, bivying on the top or sleeping at the bottom. It has so much to offer with views that will never get old!
  • Camping spot - This is a tough one as I love to sleep on top of mountains to catch the sunsets and sunrises, but if I had to pick then it would be Berneray, on the Isle of North Uist, there is something special about that place!
