Ordnance Survey Explorer Map 462 Orkney - Hoy, South Walls & Flotta
OS Explorer map 462 covers the Orkney Islands of Hoy, plus part of the Mainland and a number of smaller islands, mostly uninhabited.
Noy is much higher than the other Orkney islands. Ward Hill is 481m, while the cliffs at St John's Head are up to 350m.
The area is very important for some specials of seabird and is an RSPB reserve. It is also designated as a National Scenic Area.
The Orkney Islands are well known for their archaeological interest, with finds and ruins from the Neolithic to 18th Century. Scapa Flow, the waters south of Orkney Mainland, have been used as a shelter for ships since the Vikings, although it was closed as a Royal Navy base shortly after the end of World War 2.
